Sous Kitchen – FAQ
How it works ?
-
Sous Kitchen is a weekly food delivery service for people who want proper, restaurant-quality food at home without starting from scratch.
We cook the main part of the meal for you: the soup, stew, curry, braise, gratin or chicken dish. It arrives fully cooked and ready to reheat.
For dishes that need sides, you can choose them when placing your order. We supply the raw vegetables, salad, potatoes, rice, pasta or other sides for you to cook fresh at home while the main dish reheats.
The idea is that the most time-consuming part of the meal is already done, but the final plate still feels fresh, balanced and properly cooked.
-
Not in the usual sense.
We cook the main part of the meal for you: the soup, stew, curry, braise, gratin, or chicken dish. It arrives fully cooked and ready to reheat.
Some dishes are complete meals in themselves, such as soups, bean stews and gratins. Others are designed to be served with freshly cooked sides.
When you order, you can choose optional sides to go with your main dish, such as vegetables, salad, potatoes, rice or pasta. We supply these as raw ingredients for you to cook fresh at home while the main dish reheats.
For example, if you order butter chicken, we supply the fully cooked curry for you to reheat. You can also add basmati rice, cucumber salad or vegetables if you would like us to supply the sides too.
We do the slow cooking, stock-building and careful seasoning. You reheat the main dish and, where needed, cook the sides fresh, so the final plate feels closer to a proper home-cooked meal than a conventional ready meal.

Each week, on a Tuesday, we publish the next menu.
You then have until midnight on the following Monday to make your selection and place your order. Once the Monday midnight deadline has passed, your order is confirmed and we begin planning, sourcing and cooking for that delivery.
Your food is delivered the following Monday.
So, in simple terms:
Menu opens on Tuesday.
You choose by midnight the following Monday.
We cook during the week.
Your order is delivered the Monday after that.
You can place a one-off order or set up a subscription. Subscription is not compulsory, and the menu page will always show the order deadline and delivery date clearly.
-
Meal choices need to be confirmed by midnight on Monday for delivery the following Monday.
You can make your selection earlier in the week and change it before the deadline. Once the Monday midnight deadline has passed, your order is confirmed and we begin planning ingredients and production for that delivery.
In other words, you choose your food one week before it arrives.
-
Yes.
You can place a one-off order whenever you like. Subscription is available for people who want Sous Kitchen regularly, but it is not required. -
Yes.
All Sous Kitchen meals are portioned as single servings. If you are ordering for two people and want the same dish, simply order two portions.
This also makes it easier for people in the same household to choose different dishes from the weekly menu.
Subscriptions & payments
-
A Sous Kitchen subscription gives you a regular weekly order, but you remain in control.
Each week, you can choose your meals from the current menu before the Monday midnight deadline. Your payment is taken once your weekly order is confirmed.
-
Yes.
You can pause your subscription whenever you need to. You can pause it for a week, several weeks, or for longer if required.
This is useful if you are away, eating out more than usual, or simply do not need meals that week.
-
Yes.
The best way to do this is to subscribe, then pause your subscription when you do not need a delivery. When you want your next order, you can unpause it and select your meals from the current menu.
There is no need to cancel and restart from scratch each time.
-
Yes.
You can cancel your subscription from your customer account. The only point to remember is the weekly order deadline: once your order has passed the Monday midnight cutoff, that week’s order is confirmed and cannot usually be cancelled.
-
Payment is taken when your weekly order is confirmed.
For subscription customers, this is at the Monday midnight cutoff for delivery the following Monday. You can choose or amend your meals before that time.
### What happens if I forget to choose my meals?
If you are a subscription customer and you miss the Monday midnight selection deadline, we will choose your meals for you based on your previous preferences and ordering pattern.
For example, if you usually order a vegetable soup, two chicken dishes, a curry and a pasta or comfort dish, we will use that as a guide.
-
We accept major debit cards and credit cards. Apple Pay and Google Pay are also available where supported by the checkout.
Meals & ingredients
-
Sous Kitchen is not a microwave meal, and it is not a recipe kit.
A recipe kit still asks you to do most of the cooking. A conventional ready meal asks you to do almost none of it, but often loses the freshness, texture and flavour of a properly cooked meal.
Sous Kitchen sits between the two.
We cook the main dish for you: the stew, curry, braise, gratin, soup or chicken dish. These are the parts of the meal that take the most time, skill and depth of cooking.
If the dish needs sides, you can add them when ordering. We supply the raw vegetables, rice, potatoes, pasta or salad ingredients, and you cook them fresh at home while the main dish reheats.
That means you get the benefit of proper slow cooking, stock-making and careful seasoning, with the freshness of just-cooked sides.
Our food is designed around flavour, whole foods and balanced nutrition. We use vegetables, pulses, herbs, spices, high-welfare chicken, grass-fed beef, free-range pork, seasonal lamb, olive oil, butter and proper stocks. We avoid ultra-processed ingredients and unnecessary additives.
We also only choose dishes that reheat well. If a dish does not taste as good after reheating, or better, it does not belong on the Sous Kitchen menu.
The result is food that is much quicker than cooking from scratch, but still feels like a proper meal.
-
Yes. Balanced nutrition is one of the main reasons Sous Kitchen exists.
UK guidance recommends that adults eat around 30g of fibre a day, but most people fall short. It is surprisingly difficult to reach that level consistently when you are shopping, cooking and planning meals for yourself every week.
We build our menus with that in mind.
Our dishes are designed around good levels of protein, fibre and plant variety. We use vegetables, beans, lentils, pulses, herbs, spices, olive oil, proper stocks, high-welfare chicken, grass-fed beef, free-range pork and seasonal lamb.
Across the week, the aim is to make it easy to eat a wide variety of plants and work towards 30 different plant foods, without having to plan every meal from scratch.
If you eat a Sous Kitchen lunch and dinner most days, alongside a sensible breakfast with some fibre from fruit, oats, whole grains, nuts or seeds, you should be comfortably on track for around 30g of fibre a day.
Where a dish needs a side, we make that clear and offer suitable vegetables, salads, potatoes, rice or pasta to complete the plate.
-
All Sous Kitchen recipes are naturally gluten-free.
We do not cook with wheat, barley, rye, standard flour or other gluten-containing ingredients. Our food is based on ingredients such as vegetables, beans, lentils, pulses, rice, potatoes, herbs, spices, proper stocks, dairy, eggs, high-welfare chicken, grass-fed beef, free-range pork and seasonal lamb.
We also do not build recipes around gluten substitutes. The exception is our gluten-free pasta, which is made from naturally gluten-free ingredients such as corn, maize and rice. We do not use gums, stabilisers or artificial gluten replacements in our cooking.
Our food is prepared in a kitchen that may handle gluten at other times. When Sous Kitchen is cooking, we do not use gluten-containing ingredients, and all relevant equipment, utensils and work surfaces are cleaned before use.
Each dish will carry its own ingredient and allergen information, so please check the product details before ordering.
-
Every dish will include ingredient and allergen information.
Because recipes change weekly and some allergens may be present in specific dishes, please check the information for each product carefully before ordering.
-
Most Sous Kitchen dishes will not contain nuts, but we do not currently describe the kitchen as nut-free.
If a dish contains nuts, or includes a nut-based garnish, this will be clearly shown on the product information and label.
If you have a nut allergy, please check each dish carefully before ordering.
-
Only sometimes, and only the sides.
Sous Kitchen always cooks the main dish for you. The soup, stew, curry, braise, gratin or chicken dish arrives fully cooked and ready to reheat.
Some dishes are complete meals in themselves, such as soups, bean stews and gratins. For these, you simply reheat and serve.
Other dishes are designed to be served with freshly cooked sides. In those cases, you can add vegetables, salad, rice, potatoes or pasta when ordering, and cook them fresh at home while the main dish reheats.
The main work has already been done. The only cooking you may need to do is simple side-dish cooking.
-
Each meal comes with reheating instructions.
Most dishes can be reheated gently in the oven, on the hob or in the microwave, depending on the product. Some dishes are better reheated slowly in the oven; others work best in a saucepan.
The instructions are written for that specific dish, so please follow the label rather than using one standard method for everything.
-
All Sous Kitchen meals are delivered with a minimum of five days’ shelf life from the day they arrive. Some dishes may have a longer shelf life, usually up to seven days, depending on the dish and packaging.
Each product will have a clear use-by date on the label.
Please keep your meals refrigerated as soon as they arrive and eat them by the use-by date shown.
-
Yes.
All Sous Kitchen food is cooked fresh, never frozen, and delivered chilled.
You can freeze the meals at home if you would like to keep them for longer. Some dishes freeze better than others, so there may be small differences in texture after freezing and reheating.
For the best flavour and texture, we recommend eating the meals fresh within the use-by date where possible.

Some locations may not be available for next-day chilled delivery, including offshore islands and certain remote postcodes. If your postcode is not supported at checkout, we will not be able to deliver to that address.

Our standard delivery day is Monday.

-
Our normal delivery day is Monday, but bank holidays may affect courier collections or deliveries.
Where a bank holiday changes the delivery schedule, we will confirm the adjusted delivery day in advance.
-
We use DPD for our deliveries.
Once your order has shipped, you should receive tracking information from DPD. You can track your parcel through the DPD website or the DPD app.
-
Your first step should be to check your DPD tracking, as DPD will have the most up-to-date information on where the parcel is.
If the tracking does not resolve the issue, or if there is a problem with the food when it arrives, please contact us directly and we will look into it.
-
We pack each order in climate-controlled insulated packaging with frozen gel packs.
The packaging is designed to keep the food chilled at 5°C or below for up to 48 hours. When your delivery arrives, please unpack it promptly and put the food straight into the fridge.
-
Please use the DPD tracking options to manage your delivery.
Your order is packed in climate-controlled insulated packaging with frozen gel packs, designed to keep the food chilled at 5°C or below for up to 48 hours.
This means the food should be fine if it is delivered while you are out for part of the day. However, because the parcel contains fresh chilled food, please bring it inside and refrigerate it as soon as you can.
If you ask DPD to leave the parcel in a safe place, please choose somewhere protected, shaded and out of direct sunlight.
Packaging & recycling
-
Our goal is to minimise plastic waste wherever we can.
Most main dishes are portioned into aluminium trays and sealed with a film lid. We use aluminium because it protects the food well, is suitable for oven reheating, and avoids heating food directly in plastic.
Aluminium is also one of the best materials for recycling. It can be recycled again and again without losing quality, and around 75% of all aluminium ever produced is still in use today. That is what genuine circular packaging looks like.
Soups are portioned into glass jars. Glass is also endlessly recyclable and can be recycled repeatedly without loss of quality.
Orders are packed in a cardboard delivery box with recyclable insulation and frozen gel packs to keep the food chilled during transit.
-
Yes, most of the packaging is recyclable.
The aluminium tray, glass jar, cardboard box and insulation can all be recycled. The film lid can usually be recycled with soft plastics, where local facilities or supermarket collection points are available.
Please check your local recycling rules, as collection systems vary by council.
-
Please rinse or wipe out any food residue first.
Once clean, the aluminium tray can usually go into your household recycling. If your council gives specific instructions for foil or aluminium trays, please follow their local guidance.
-
The film lid should be removed from the tray.
Where accepted, it can be recycled with soft plastics. Many supermarkets offer soft-plastic collection points if your household recycling does not accept film.
-
Please rinse the jar and recycle it with your household glass recycling.
The lid should be recycled according to your local council’s guidance.
-
The cardboard delivery box can go into household cardboard recycling.
The insulation is recyclable. Please check the packaging information included with your order and follow your local council’s recycling guidance.
-
Please reuse the gel packs if you can.
If you need to dispose of them, allow them to defrost first and follow the disposal instructions printed on the pack. Depending on the gel pack type, you may be able to empty the liquid as directed and recycle the outer plastic with soft plastics.
Please do not put full gel packs into household recycling.
